Maintaining your steel building

Tips for Maintaining Your Steel Building

It’s important to keep maintaining your steel building. The point of buying an Arizona steel building is that it doesn’t have the same maintenance standards as, say, a material like wood. Of course, low maintenance is not the same as no maintenance. As an Arizona steel building manufacturer, we’ll tell you the basics so you’re less likely to have to deal with a major structural problem down the road.

Survey the Exterior

Steel is an exceptionally strong material, but there’s no reason to put undue pressure on it if you don’t have to. If there’s overgrowth from trees or hedges or supplies leaning up against the steel, it can compromise the structural integrity. Plus, it can interfere with natural water evaporation after it rains. (If you happen to be in a part of the state where it snows, you’ll need to keep an eye on the maximum weight the roof can take and potentially shovel it off to prevent collapse.)

Wash the Building

All of the grime in the Arizona air can wind up on your building. Left unattended, that grime can turn into mold or rust. Metal may not be porous, but it’s not entirely out of the question for it to be a carrier. Thankfully, this maintenance task doesn’t need to be done at set time intervals. If the exterior looks fine, then there’s no need to wash it. Plus, even if you do need to wash it, it may not be much more than a good spray-down with a hose.

Prioritize Paint Touch-Ups

This tip for maintaining your steel building goes hand-in-hand with the washing tip. You’re essentially protecting the steel as much as possible from any harmful particulates that could lead to rust or mold. As soon as you see scratches or patches, it’s time to get out the paint and primer and cover it. We recommend having a reserve of supplies on hand, so it’s as easy as setting aside a few minutes to get it done.

Check the Doors and Windows

A squeaky door or a stuck window are annoyances at first, but they can severely interfere with the functionality of the building if you’re not careful. Make sure that you’re oiling the door hinges and window joints when you notice them start to malfunction. Also, keep an eye on any weather stripping you have on the windows. It’s easy to miss the deterioration if you’re not paying attention.
